The Pentateuch refers to the first five books of the Bible. Here you’ll find introductory notes for each session, as well as the slides and discussion questions.

Session 1: Overview of the Pentateuch

We'll watch this video in our first group meeting. The notes refer to some background reading that you can do before or after this meeting, but this isn't essential.

Session 2: Primeval History (Genesis 1-11)

Read Genesis 1-11 and the notes below in preparation for this session. Andrew Wilson makes reference to the Mitchell and Webb video in the section on 'The Origin of Evil'.

Session 3: Patriarchal History (Genesis 12-50)

Read Genesis 12; 14-19; 21-22; 25:19-26:5; 27:1-46; 28:10-22; 29:31-30:24; 35:1-15; 37:1-36; 49:1-27; 50:15-21 and the notes below in preparation for this session.

Session 4: Exodus Narrative

Read Exodus 1-15 and the notes below in preparation for this session. If you haven't yet discovered the excellent book summaries from The Bible Project, there's no time like the present!

Session 5: The Wilderness Narrative

Read Exodus 16-19, 24, 32-34; Numbers 11, 13, 21:1-9, 24:10-25 & ch. 25 and the notes below in preparation for this session. The second instalment of the Bible Project video summary of the Book of Exodus is also worth a look.

Session 6: Laws, Lists and Land (Part 1)

Read Exodus 20, 22-23; Leviticus 5, 8, 10, 14, 19-20, 25; Hebrews 9 and the notes below in preparation for this session.

Session 7: Laws, Lists and Land (Part 2)

Read Exodus 21; Leviticus 16; Deuteronomy 5-11, 15, 27-28; Galatians 3 and the notes below in preparation for this session. The session includes a lecture by Peter Williams on 'Does the Bible Support Slavery?' The slides for this lecture are included below. The short video is an interesting accompaniment to the Williams lecture.

Session 8: Punchline of the Pentateuch

Read Deuteronomy 17:14-20; 18:15-22; chs. 29-34; Romans 10 and the notes below in preparation for this session. The Tim Keller video is a useful accompaniment to Andrew Wilson's teaching on the circumcision of the heart.
