The statement about God that we find in Exodus 34 is, quite simply, the most important statement about God to be found anywhere in the Old Testament. It’s therefore a really important one to know!

Here’s the passage:

[The LORD] passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, ‘The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.’ (Exodus 34:7-8)

Character of God

The Bible Project videos on the Character of God are an excellent introduction to the significance of the statement in Exodus 34:7-8.

Punishing the children for the sin of the fathers

This can appear to be a troubling statement about God. Here you'll find some resources that will help you see that this statement doesn't contradict God's justice, but rather serves to underline it.
